I like Desolation better. Tombstone was kinda difficult to do anything because everything is so open and far apart. Desolation was just lots more fun. Hang 'em High in Halo 1 still pwns though!
Desolation is fun if you like symmetrical maps, like warlock. Great for King of the hill, or territories. Good for CTF, and team slayer. Not too good for snipers, b/c the walkway around the map gives you no cover, so people always hide....which is gay.
Tombstone is just awesome! I like all the new walkways added and the new control room adds for some good up-close action for that Shotgun. Sniping can be hard, b/c of the overhead walkways blocking your view. Great for practically anything, even Bubblebath!

Tombstone gives a map that is more multi purpose than desolation.
It gives you more environment to use and play around with to use for your advantage.

I prefer tombstone, huge, bunch of weapons, but I really havent had time to play any halo so i dont have a real good reason. it just seems better.
also, the only fun ive ever had on desolation was putting the vehicles on it and playing on the grav lifts
