Halo 5: Guardians Matchmaking and Custom Games Will Run on Dedicated Servers

H5-MP-Beta-Trench-Trench-Run

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the first time we’ve seen dedicated servers used in a Halo game.  At E3’s announcement last year, we were told that all competitive multiplayer games would use dedicated servers hosted on Microsoft’s Azure cloud powering Xbox Live.  Much to our disappointment, this only translated to matchmaking in the final version of the game.

The Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta ran on dedicated servers, which we know matchmaking would continue to use when the game finally releases later this year, but we have confirmation over on the Team Beyond forums from Josh Holmes that custom games will also use dedicated servers.  This doesn’t address LAN or local console multiplayer play or other game modes like Campaign, Cooperative and Forge, but it’s a great step for playing online where dedicated server games are much more reliable than peer-to-peer hosted games.  Dedicated servers removes the infamous “host advantage” many players are familiar with and reduces the effects of lag on a game for a more fair and overall better experience.

Hunt the Truth – Halo 5: Guardians Teaser Site

hth-traitor

A new Halo 5: Guardians countdown teaser site was revealed by a tweet from Frankie earlier this evening.

Speculations are a teaser trailer of some kind will be unlocked at the end of the countdown which happens on Sunday, March 21st at 9:00PM Eastern, 6:00PM Western, 1:00A GMT Monday, March 22nd.  The site has an image with the word “TRAITOR” engraved on a bullet and the quote, “What seems like the end, is only the beginning”, when shared with the #HUNTtheTRUTH tag.  No additional information is available at this time, but it does beg some interesting questions like, who is the traitor being reference and what new stories will begin to unfold from this betrayal.

Insane Sniper Kills on MCC

Jun_Illustration

Halo is filled with many moments of awesome kills, both skilled from the pros and the occasionally lucky kills from those not as skilled.  Then there are the ones that are just totally insane that you couldn’t plan even if you tried.  Early this month, a video surfaced by Lawrencce1 on YouTube from a Halo 3 game on Foundry of a snipe that ricocheted three times before connecting with his foe.  Rightly so, it has over a million views.

Not a week later, Jimmy Boswell on YouTube upped the ante with a two-for-one snipe ricocheting 6 times on Haven in Halo 4 connecting with the head of an extremely unfortunate enemy half way across the map.

Now since the MCC is working for more players, we would not be surprised to see more of these kinds of videos with being able to use Upload Studio to create videos from your saved films.  If you have an awesome moment to share, let us know about it in our forums, or share it with us on Twitter or Facebook.

New Content Update Slated for April and Relic and ODST on the Way

Halo-The-Master-Chief-Collection-ODST-Plaza

The next content update is slated to come out in April with continued focus on improved matchmaking and in-game experiences.  Dan Ayoub tells us in an update on the Master Chief Collection that server side updates are still happening in between content updates and more details on the next update will be available before it releases.  We also get a glance at an ODST screenshot running in MCC and a comparison set on the new Relic, which you can see below.  There’s still no release date on the extra perks for those who played the game before Dec 19th, but Relic is undergoing final play testing and we can’t imagine ODST is far behind.

Upcoming Halo Novels for 2015

tumblr_mej5zz11lS1r5ajivo4_1280

Novels have always provided a deeper glance into the Halo Universe for those daring enough to venture forth.  This year, five different publications will hit the shelves, both digitally and physically expanding on known parts of the universe and some setting the groundwork for Halo 5: Guardians.  New Blood, currently available, details the life of Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck after the events of ODST and his role as a Spartan, which we’ll be covering in an episode here in the near future.

In last week’s Canon Fodder, Jeff “GrimBrother One” Easterling lists out the upcoming publications along with their release date. An important one to not is Halo: Shadow of Intent by Joseph Staten, the former Lead Creative Director of the Halo Franchise while it was under the hands of Bungie.  Some may remember one of his previous novels, Contact Harvest, when we learn about Humanity’s first contact with the Covenant.

Grim also sat down with Frankie to talk about his short story writing for Halo publications and the current state of the extended universe.  343 Industries is looking to other forms of media that allows people to dive into digital shorts for those who don’t like to sit and read a long time, but still using traditional print to offer long expositions that dive into the greater expanse of the growing universe.  Frankie explains that the universe as it stands today is a lot more complex than the earlier years of the franchise saying:

We had a known bad guy that couldn’t be reasoned with. We had an opaque mystery in the Forerunners that couldn’t be penetrated. We had simple, almost binary motivations and everything was either good or evil. Now we have a galaxy in chaos and a lot of nuance in motivations and politics. We have Covenant with their own agenda, we have the beginning of an Elite civil war. We have a religion in tatters but perhaps in the beginning of a revival. We have Halsey whose past crimes have been exposed, but then so has the victory and good those crimes were in service of. And of course, we have the Master Chief dealing with the loss of a vital part of his own identity, and questioning his past. All of that stuff is feeding into the novels and comics and it’s all grist for the mill.

Here’s what we can look forward to this year:

Halo: New Blood by Matt Forbeck – a digital-first short novel released on March 2

Halo: Hunters in the Dark by Peter David – a full-length novel on sale June 16

Halo: Saint’s Testimony by Frank O’Connor – a digital single on sale July 27

Halo: Last Light by Troy Denning – a full-length novel on sale September 7

Halo: Shadow of Intent by Joseph Staten – a digital-first novella on sale December 7

Halo Ad – One Lucky Grunt

A new ad is out from Xbox for Halo: The Master Chief Collection featuring an interview with supposedly the only Grunt to survive the onslaught of Covenant by Master Chief.  In this comedy of an interview, the Grunt claims to have survived every encounter of the Master Chief, but now with fans being able to play all four stories on one console, is he up for the challenge?

Podtacular 465: Halo 5 Beta Breakdown: Spectator Mode

Our latest show comes from the depths of Pax East that took place this past weekend including the grand finals of HCS Season One.  To no mere coincidence, this week we talk about one of thenew, highly demanded features in Halo: Spectator mode.  While what we experienced is likely to change over the rest of the game’s development, it showed a glimpse of what we could have in the future and what that means to streamers, broadcasters and commentators.  The guests on this show are very fitting given the topic as they are as close as it gets to having Spectator mode being the most valued.  Our first group comes from our friends over at GrifballHub, Goosechecka and Receptor17.  You can see them streaming games with their own improvised Spectator mode used for streaming live Grifball matches on Twitch every Wednesday and Thursday.  Our final guest many know as one of the golden eSports casters for gaming, none other than Goldenboy, who casts many HCS tournaments including the grand finals of season one.  There are some striking similarities between the two groups yet some distinct feature requests that would be great additions to Halo 5: Guardians.
