Halo Cinematics Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Halo 2 Anniversary - Uprising RemasteredWe’ve seen glimpses of the Halo 2 Anniversary cinematics remastered by Blur, the same studio that did the Halo Wars cinematics, but today, Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive cinematics trailer for Halo 2 Anniversary.  This two and a half minutes is enough to give any Halo fan goosebumps.  In addition to the trailer, EW provides three comparison videos of Chief getting his armor repaired, Cortana interpreting Regret’s message on Delta Halo, and Keyes pulling out the Index at the end of the game.

Podtacular 448: Extra Life 2014

This past weekend, we joined thousands of gamers around the world in support of Extra Life, a 24-hour charity event where people play video games to raise donations for their local children’s hospitals.  We were blessed to reach our initial goal of $500 and we appreciate everyone who donated to the cause.  While the event is over, you can still contribute to our Extra Life team.  We had a great schedule of Halo gameplay including a shenanigan-filled Halo 3 campaign with the Podtacular staff.  If you’re interested in finding out what happened, you can go here.

In Halo news, IGN released the final two videos of The Master Chief Collection running at 1080P, 60FPS.  Halo 3 look surprisingly good despite the age of the engine, being able to pick out the subtitles in textures and the smoothness of models.  Stonetown, the remake of Zanzibar got the in-depth walk-through treatment this week.  Halo Fest is returning for the launch of The Master Chief Collection, but not in the way you may remember it if you were at Pax Prime in 2011.  Finally, we got a trailer for Remaking the Legend Halo 2: Anniversary documentary that will be premiering on Friday and available for free on Xbox Video and the Halo Channel November 11th.

Halo 2 Anniversary Fully Supporting Forge

IGN AwashHalo map makers everywhere are getting the red carpet treatment with a fully functioning Forge for The Master Chief Collection.  As part of the ongoing IGN First coverage of the game, Dave Mertz, Project Lead for Halo 2 Anniversary at Certain Affinity, walks us through Forge in the Halo 2 Anniversary sandbox, which will include not one, not two, but three blank Forge maps!  The map on demo is called Awash, which has the Forge World/Island feel, but is completely over water.  Not to worry as there is a whole library of natural terrain pieces you can use to create your map literally from scratch with ground pieces, rocks, foliage, etc.  Precision editing from Halo: Reach is making a come back and the budget is now based on object count, but we’re also getting control switches that control dynamic and interactive elements to Forged maps.  That’s right, you can now open and close doors, activate the EMP from Bloodline, trigger remote detonations, spawning vehicles and even spawn and despawn geometry!  The switches show the original BSOD from Halo 2’s Zanzibar switch for the interactive switch.  The shooting switch we saw in Stonetown is also usable as a switch.  There’s a whole new scripting system for these switches and we’re hoping for more details on that later.  Added bonus to the video is the introduction of the Heretic Banshee and a Battle Creek that has been completely Forged from scratch.

So to recap Halo 2 Anniversary’s Forge:

  • Three blank canvas maps for H2A Forge including the demoed map Awash
  • Natural terrain pieces to completely build from the ground up: ground pieces, trees, rocks, structures, etc.
  • Budget is now object count based instead of an arbitrary value assigned to an item
  • Precision editing is returning from Halo: Reach
  • Interactive switches allow for dynamic map elements, doors, controls, spawners, etc.
  • The Heretic Banshee is available for Forge canvas maps
  • Battle Creek remake map variant was built for the IGN preview (hopefully as a built-in variant)

Get Zealous for Zenith

e3-2014-halo-2-anniversary-ascension-needles-versus-bulletsOut of all the Halo 2 Anniversary maps we’ve seen so far, this has the most coverage by far.  None-the-less, IGN First is on-board with Max Hoberman from Certain Affinity to give a detailed walk-through of another one of Halo 2’s iconic maps: Zenith, the Ascension Remake.  Out of all the maps we’ve seen, this one has the least amount of changes to it aside from the giant dome shield you can activate for the dish and a bit of cover built out for the bridge of death.

The Lowdown on Lockdown

pax-2014-halo-2-anniversary-lockout-elbowWe’ve seen quite a bit of Lockout already from when it was announced at Pax Prime this year, but there are still a few more gems that players may have not picked up on or noticed the first couple of times around.  Continuing their map run-throughs with Max Hoberman, IGN First takes and in-depth look at Lockdown, the remake of Lockout.  Many of the jumps from the original map are preserved, and the additions made to the maps make it a little more easy to not get stuck in any one spot and give players a fighting chance when they’re down.  As one of the most beloved Halo 2 maps, Certain Affinity did their best to keep to the original but giving it the anniversary spin.
