Podtacular 548: Finishing This Cake

We’ve seen Halo really expand in the trans-media realm with animated shorts and small episodic series, and many culinary creations based off the Halo franchise, but when those two collide, you get Halo Cake Wars! While Dust Storm was fortunate enough to be at the Halo World Championship where the cake was enjoyed by many Halo fans, the awesome part was getting to see how the bakers created their Halo themed cakes ultimately crowning one victorious.  Halo game news, on the other hand has begun to trickle a little bit, but we’re not without a few updates from the Halo universe.

Halo takes on Cake Wars

CakeWars-Round-2It might not satisfy a big, Grunty thirst, but this episode of Cake Wars will be more than enough to satisfy any Spartan’s hunger. In last week’s episode, four bakers put their talents to creating iconic characters and themes from the Halo franchise with the winner getting $10,000. Cake Wars judges were joined by Major Nelson to judge the creativity of the contestant’s cake as they reflect the themes from the game. After two rounds of judging, Peter Tidwell was victorious in capturing the taste of Halo taking the prize of $10K and presenting his winning cake to players and attendees at the Halo World Championship.

I had the opportunity to have some of the cake that won when I was attending the championship and I can attest to the cake’s design and taste being on point.  You may not have seen me in the show, but if you listen closely enough, you’ll hear me.

Halo: Community Update Recap – Summer Red, Summer Blue

Halo CU 8/5/16

343 Industries has returned with another Halo Community Update, this time highlighting some of what’s to come. To start, Triple Team is available in Halo 5: Guardians right now and will be until the next weekly playlist drops. A recap was made available of the events of the HCS Summer Finals in North America, where CLG took home the win. Halo Wars 2 will be playable this year at Gamescom, but there will not be a Microsoft Press Conference as opposed to last year, where it was revealed. New content was teased both in the article with the confirmed release of Forge pre-fabs and a file browser, as well as Bravo’s confirmation on his own Twitter that more content would be revealed later this month.

Moving on to Canon Fodder, GrimBrotherOne took a deeper dive into Halo: Ground Command and Halo: Fleet Battles. Both are table-top large scale war simulators set in the Halo universe, developed by Spartan Games. To start, some display models will be available at this year’s Gen Con. The two person starter set for Ground Command, based on the Battle of Reach, will feature game-authentic models and heavy customization features, like different parts for the Phantom model. Grim took the time to write up some lore descriptions for certain types of infantry and vehicles, so you can take a look at the article if you’d like to read more.

Podtacular 546: State of the Halo Community

The Halo Community is comprised of a diverse group of fans who find many different aspects of the franchise to call home.  Whether it’s the lore of the universe, or the competitive nature of multiplayer, or the creativeness of the Forge tools, or any other many smaller communities, there has always been a special bond, comradery if you will, of Halo fans supporting one another.  The Halo community has not been without it’s highs and lows and in more recent years has been unfortunately turbulent.  A recent event called into question some Halo YouTubers and Community Influencers’ impact on the development of Halo and 343’s treatment of the franchise.  As someone who has been in the community for a significant amount of time, we felt it necessary to address some of these issues that has plagued the community for far to long.

Counter Logic Gaming Wins HCS Summer Pro League

HCS CLG Winning Pose

Over the past few days, the final Halo Championship Series Summer Matches took place, pitting some of the biggest eSports teams against each other in carefully crafted matches to determine who would come out on top. The competition worked on a bracket system and was limited to North American teams. The matches began on July 30th and in the end, plenty of great teams went home to prepare to compete in the Fall Season. You can catch up on all of the great HCS matches on Halo’s official Twitch channel.

All of this culminated in an exhilarating match between relative newcomers Enigma6 (encompassing Huke, bubu dubu, Cratos, and Shooter) and the legendary Counter Logic Gaming (Lethul, Snakebite, Frosty, and Royal2). The two teams faced off with Capture the Flag on Fathom, and CLG pulled up with a single flag capture, leaving the score 1-0 as CLG took home first place. But, if you’re an Enigma6 fan, or a fan of most of the other eSports teams that participated here, you’ll be pleased to know that plenty of teams, despite not winning here, will be going forward to the Fall Season. The question is still up in the air if anyone can stop CLG’s winning streak? You can check out all of the teams advancing on HaloWaypoint.com, along with plenty of other eSports information to catch you up.
