Podtacular Episode 129: Sierra 117 Campaign Show
for the week of October 2nd, 2007

(hosts foo mo, JVB, drive_c)

introductions

I got halo 3 at the midnight launch and when I got home I immediately
popped in the disk. My first impression of the game was that the graphics
were stunning! The opening was epic I would go into more detail but I dont
want to spoil anything. Unfortunately,I was a bit disappointed with the AI,
it is a big improvement but the way Bungie made it sound, I was expecting a
lot more.

Hey Podtacular!
I first have to say that I really wanted to play in the Battle in the
Ruins of New Mombossa, or at least see a cinematic (this battle is the
Believe ad Campaign). They started the game after the Master Chief had
been captured, instead of what I wanted to see, with him falling back to
Earth. The Jungle is lush and beautiful and the 5.1 Surround sound makes
it so much more realistic, Sometimes I would just stop and look around to
hear the noises move around me. To all you Firefly Fans, Nathan Fillion is
voice acting in the Game as Sergeant Reynolds… Sound Familiar? :) If you
don’t know what I am talking about go download The Season of Firefly off
iTunes. You’ll enjoy it.
Keep on Fraggin’ Trucks!

I loved the this level so much. the lighting and such was amazing. and i
loved the opening video. it was funny. i know one skull is near the first
battle. when you drop down into the pool where some covies where droped,
go right untill you see a rock sticking out. at the end of that rock the
blind skull lays. ya so halo 3 is awsome, and so is the gravity hammer!
short story, when i first got the hammer with a friend in coop, i said
“it’s hammer time” i thought that was funny. GO ARBY!!

Sierra 117 wrapped up in one word? WOW.

The first level really counts in a game, so I was looking forward to
Sierra 117. As I began, I noticed that the lighting was amazing. Playing
Sierra 117 in HDTV was beautiful. The enemies were obviously much smarter,
and I kinda flipped out when I saw a grunt with two lit plasma grenades in
its hands. I died several times even on normal, but I learned from my
mistakes. When I met the first Brute Chieftain, I killed him as fast as I
could so I could get my hands on the hammer. It felt so good smashing
grunts in.

There are two skulls in this level, the Blind skull and the Iron skull.
The blind skull is located on a cliff ledge near where you meet the first
phantom, and the Iron skull is near the end on a rooftop. Some tips on
speedrunning the level (for Campaign scoring) is to always know where you
are and to use the environment to your advantage. Try jumping on trees to
skip certain parts, and know where your enemies are.

Thats all I got. Enjoy Halo 3 guys, keep on fraggin trucks.

(P.S. Good job with the new website guys!)

wow i thought that the first level was great. i really enjoyed the graphics
especially the lighting. it was kinda funny because in situations when
there might be a jackal across the river, i would be using my pistol to
take them out in stead of the AR not to save ammo just because its
surprisingly accurate. well all in all its a great level.
i have a question about matchmaking, when ive been doing team slayer, i
get irritated because i always get stuck with shotty snipers. i rape with
the shotty but i cant snipe for my life. i was wondering if you guys felt
the same or if you didnt even get that much of it, it just ticked me off
when ever i would poke my head out and get sniped on narrows.
thanks for reading its my first time on the podcast, ill keep on playing
halo 3 and keep sending stuff in, thanks

Ah, Halo. How we’ve loved you, how we’ve missed you. Starting out Halo 3 is
a tremendous task, and Sierra 117 pulls it off gracefully. It hits a
balance between scripted tutorials, and the exposition-less rest of the
story. Starting with an AR, you immediately start to take it in. You might
start using some Covenant weapons, or just stick with Human, or do both,
but all together, you should be killing Covenant by the bucketful at the
end. It is a fitting first level to one of the best games of 2007, both as
a mission, and an even better tutorial level. My only complaint is the lack
of “Story so Far” in the beginning. Not everyone (not me) completely
remembers Halo 2. Many have tried to block out the ending.

Dear Podtacular,
I love the Halo 3 AI. Mainly how they know when to hel and when to stay
back and let you do it so you don;t kill your own guys. A good example is
the first few moments of the level THE ARK. When you have A sniper yu get
get the first shot cause they let you and there cool like that for most of
the game, while also handing out “Constructive Crtitiscim.” (sorry I don’t
know how to spell critisisim) Thanks a bunch for reading my aubmision.
Love, Me.

The question that is floating in my mind is, “Was changing the X button a
good move?” I try to reload and I either die or deploy something I didn’t
want to deploy. (a mine perhaps?) I can easily see the X button being put
back to it’s original function and putting the equipment on the Right
Bumper. Yea, I know it makes sense to have the Right Bumper as right
reload, but I just feel more comfortable with a button scheme I am already
used to.

As for graphics, Very good except, too shiny. It doesn’t give that
realistic feel to me. It feels more like a video game than Halo 2, than
something real life.

Keep on Fraggin’ Trucks

I want to start out by saying that I can’t wait for all of the up coming
Halo 3 shows there is so much there to fill hundreds of future shows. Now
for the content of this show, there is so much to say.

First of all the begining cut scene whas absolutly amazing. The voice
acting, as always, is amazing. The graphics are very crisp. As for the gameplay…where do I start. The first time I saw that
gold plated brute standing on that log I was awestruck for a split second
then I owned him with the AR and mopped up the grunts. I was amazed to
see how many grunts they threw at you and that they were actually hard to
beat ( I was playing on the Bungie reccomended difficulty: Heroic)
Then there was the bridge…...it took me dying a few times to find the
tunnell that is underneath the bridge. After that it was an all out
battle with the first Chieftan and that darn hammer!!!! GAMEPLAY TIP: If
you are close to the brute chieftan as he is about to ka-smack you with the
hammer melee him right before he swings and he will get disoriented and
then yell at you. Once you have done this you need to kill him quick
because he is now very angry and wants to hammerize you into the ground.

One last thing…
pelicans pwning the phantoms at the end of the level = AMAZING!!!

Keep on fraggin chieftans! JVB and FooMo Jive Keep on Keepin on!

Hey Podtacular, Anorexic Leader here to talk about strategies for Sierra
117.

I’ve played this level a few times, and have come across plenty of basic
Halo techniques to get you through in one piece. There is not a whole lot
special about this level, however it is the first campaign level, and I’m
sure if you were eager like myself this was probably the first bi of Halo
3 you saw. First off, the Brutes. If you are playing on a harder
difficulty such as Heroic, or Legendary, you will notice that Brutes seem
very hard to take down. However, always target the brutes before any other
ground enemies seeing as how the rest of the battle will be mop up kills,
against grunts and shielded jackals. You will also get a chance to be shot
at by many jackal snipers hidden amongst trees and cliffs. A very good idea
would be to turn on campaign scoring to make sure you kill the snipers,
before you run into a battle. If you don’t take them out soon, they can be
really annoying later when your shields are low. However they are easy to
spot, because of the purple light put off by their gun. When you reach the
downed Pelican, I would suggest grabbing the sniper rifle, and saving it
for jackals up ahead. Common strategies such as shooting explosive barrels
to kill clustered enemies, and using grenades to stick lesser enemies (or
Brutes) are also very helpful. I have to say one of the most annoying
things that killed me a few times in Legendary was the darn suicide bomber
grunts. They charge at you with two lit plasma grenades. If you don’t
notice them, they are a real pain. However if you shoot them early enough,
they end up killing their allies. Enemies only use bubble shields, and
basic equipment in this level, Because they save the more complex
equipment for later levels in the campaign. A good tactic for a bubble
shield is to quickly charge in and plant a grenade. Most of the time
Brutes will not notice and stand there awaiting death. You also run into
one brute chieftain with a gravity hammer. He will use his invincibility,
but as long as you shoot from a safe distance when his shields drop, you
should be fine. This level is not that hard, and you shouldn’t have
problems getting the scoring achievement for this level. There are no
terminals, but one skull. The skull can be found close to where you free
Johnson from his cell. Walk to the back of the level, and run along the
high catwalks, it should be a building with a roof of glass. Walk to the
very end of the building, and tucked away in a corner, yet very easy to
spot is the Iron skull. Pick it up for an easy 10 Gamerscore. Free
Johnson, then board the Pelican, and the mission is over. However some
funny one-liners are heard in the next cutscene. “Sorry for the tight
squeeze” “Tell the commander her ace is in the hole” I laughed the first
time I heard it…

Cortana also shows up in little mini-cut scenes that are really
frustrating. They add great back story, but really pull you out of the
mission. They also make you walk real slow, like in Gears of War. And that
was something I really hated. I wouldn’t mind them so much, if they were
tucked away in the corner of the HUD, or something, but I really think
thats its a waste of time to have them show up full screen. -Anorexic
Leader

My bro had borrowed a 360 from his lab supervisor and thus I was able to
play Halo 3 till 4AM when my mom came down to send me to bed. My first
reaction was WOW looking at the level of graphics in the game. It was even
better then I thought it would be. The animations looked really lifelike
and the lighting effects really added to the environment. One thing I was
disappointed on was the brutes. They were a a complete pushover. I didn’t
usually meet more then one or two at a time and I didn’t really see any of
the partner to partner coordination that Bungie talked about in the Vidoc.
I did see a marine getting the crap punched out of him, but that was in
the campaign preview. However the brutes were never the less more
challenging then the elites and a good source of deadly weapons. Cortana’s
little appearances were a little cryptic at first but if you listen to them
throughout the game her ramblings kind of make sense. The pelicans getting
shot down and all the events that followed really engaged me in the game.
All I have to complain about is that Lord Hood looked a little too…shiny
i guess. He just didn’t blend in the world like the other characters did.
But other then that Sierra 117 was a good start to what was an amazing
game experience.

This has been my rather long review of Sierra 117. Thanks alot, and I like
the new Podtacular site.

I would like to give a shout out to Chuckie J, and all the members of
Godtacular, and a quick thanks to Logan Payne for his awesomeness!
Keep on Fraggin’ the 250,000+ Halo 3 noobs!

Ellz here, just wanted to say I love the show and this is my first
submission and hopefully not my last.

The first time I played Sierra 117 I was totally getting my ass kicked by
the Brutes because I was so taken aback by the beauty of the level and the
graphics. I couldn’t concentrate on the game at all because it looked so
good and I wanted to take it all in, so it took a while to get through but
in the end I loved the level and it was a nice way to ease us into the
game.

The opening movie was sweet and it was unexpected to see Master Chief fall
out of the sky, but one thing I didn’t understand was how Johnson and the
Arbiter had got back from Delta Halo? I wish they had of shown that but
otherwise I thought the level was amazing. Apart from the graphics being
astounding, I loved the way the level played and how it began to set up
the story with Cortana’s mysterious messages and the opportunity to play
alongside the Arbiter.

Great level, great game. What else is there to say?

My first thought when I watched that opening cutscene was “wow”. I never
expected the graphics to look this good, especially all the detail in the
Master Chief’s armor. The lighting effects looked top notch; being able
to see the sun reflecting off each leaf was amazing. As for the story, I
was impressed. It really felt like a desperate situation. The part
midway through the level when the pelican crashes was definitely one of
the highlights for me. After finishing this level, I knew I wouldn’t be
disappointed with the rest of the game. I knew it had lived up to all
expectations.

Thanks for the great podcast and keep it up.

HAY GUYS IT’S MY FIRST TIME SENDING IN A QUESTION MY GAMERTAG IS LONESTAR
ACE AND MY QUESTION IS WHAT DID YOU GUYS THINK OF THE ENDING OF HALO3 LIKE
THE LAST MISSION AND THE CUT SCENE AFTER THE CREDITS NO NEED TO GO INTO TO
MUCH DETAIL JUST IN CASE THERES SOME PEOPLE LISTENING WHO HAVE NOT
FINISHED THE FIGHT.

I loved the story in Halo 3. The beginning of the game was great! From
the opening scene to hearing the brute howling in the beginning just
before your first encounter. I found my self really pulled into the
story this time around, unlike halo 2 were I just kind of went though the
cut scenes.
The graphics were great, not spectacular, but great. The game play is
awesome, and who doesn’t like 4 player online co-op with a point and metal
system!!!!!!!!

And of course the great Match Making system has returned WITH BALANCED
WEAPONS along with our beloved Y button for close friends ships at the
touch of a button. Who would of thought that now, when you switch to
the sword, it takes a second or so to grab it and extend it, unlike halo 2
were it was touch of a button. But WATCH OUT FOR THAT HAMMER!!!!

All and all I’m loving everything about H3 so far, the only thing that
frustrates me in not know where any of the weapons are on the new maps.

keep up the good work

HALO NEWS
RETURNS FOR THE WIN!!!

well..halo 3 was basically ok not as great as i thought it will be,so i was
very much looking forward in the game different kind of aliens not the same
aliens and brutes all the time but they had better AI and shiny armor which
is an improvement to the halo series..and especially the AR assault rifle
that weapon was soo disappointing and bungie said its better than halo 1
assault rifle yeah right, and the story for halo 3 was ok a little better
than halo 2 story which i was mad about..although they could of have more
vehicles, more bigger landspaces to travel not to just stay in the map, were
i can go to that mountain which it didnt let me.however i was very
impressed with the gravity hammer that weapon is way better than the lazer
gun.so bungie did some improvements on halo 3 especially the lighting,AI
but could of have more bigger explosions and more tactics to more….but
its a good game not great…my gamertag is soldiera51..
By the way the movie is going to be better.

First off, i want to say WOW! Halo 3 is/was amazing! Now, the story. The
beginning left too many holes for me, and i don’t have enough money to go
out and buy 4 comic books. After that, it just got better for me. The
cortana flashes really told some story, and the terminals continued
(somewhat) of the A.R.G. While the level cortana was just too hard on
Heroic by myself, i can see myself playing through it again and again.
Also, read the terminals. It tells a really good story.

First the Blind skull is at the beginning of the map. When you get to the
first group of Covenant, kill all of them and then right beyond that first
section where there is a cliff out to the water, there is a boulder on the
right side of that cliff that you can jump to and the blind skull is right
there.

About points and the level, to get points there are a lot of areas where
there are one or two brutes and then a ton of grunts around. At those
areas you can stick the brute and most of the time it will give you a
multikill medal and a stick medal. That should get you around 600+ points
just for the one stick, depending on which type of brute you kill.

Also on the part where they have the pelicans get attacked by the banshees
on Legendary there are a couple jackal snipers across the river. You want
to try to take these buggers out first with your battle rifle cause it
really sucks trying to take out that whole squad of covenant when they are
constantly killing you across the river.
The only thing, storywise that I wonder about is how Master Chief, Johnson
and Keyes all got to Earth at the same time. I’m guessing that Master
Chief jumped off the Forerunner ship but I don’t understand how Johnson
and Keyes got there so quickly.

The most important thing about this level is that it is the first. What do
I mean by that? Bungie needed to give an intro to the story, ease new
people into the gameplay and show off the water and light effects in
Sierra 117. This is evident in the way you slowly have more options as you
go through the level. I didn’t realize that rather long walk from the
beginning of the level to the first encounter was actually invisible
movement training for new players, but that’s what it is.
My main complaint at this point in the game is that Bungie claimed that
snipers and such wouldn’t always be in the same spots and yet they seemed
to be. I felt like I could take out the one on the far side of the river
blindfolded after a while.

iIf you are on single player, and you get to the part of the level with the
brute that has a gravity hammer, here is what to do when all you have is
human weapons. You need to kill the Arbiter, and take his carbine. Then
the brute will go down with ease. Mind you this is on normal.

I thought the campaign was allllright. I am a little disappointed that the
chief didnt go out with a bang, and I was really expecting this game to
answear all of my halo related question about the forerunners, the
incident with sargent johnson and the elite at the end of halo 1 and some
of the other question about the other halo rings. I was hoping that the
single player campaign was going to be longer, (I thought it was rather
short). But i guess well have to wait for the next halo game to find all
that out. Here’s to Halo 4, FIGHT SOME MORE!

hi,i amlong time listener, and i finally got the chance to send something, in case you really read this and cant get my name right, call me ghosty
boy for short
my personal experience with the first level was very memorable, i got the
game, and played it straight all night
i played co-op so its somewhat easier, the game is simply amazing in
grafic, and the first movie, its good, but if youread the fall of reach,
you get the cortana chossing the chief part, the game plays amazing and
its really challenging, it tooks a lot to get past the area with the two
phantoms, but in the end it can be done
ill send a shout out to phoenix 298 my brother from the same mother,
hoping you read this
ghosty boy

The intro to the first level with cortanas speach goes back to the first
halo book Fall of reach which was cool. it was nice to see the part were
you look at the lights again like they did in Halo 1 and 2. the sounds,
graphics, and AI were really improved from halo 2 and the AI are smater as
well. Also about the begining, Johnsons great lines he says are one thing
that is great about the game. I like how you can hit off the grunt back
packs which is preatty funny. The first skull you can find is in section
one of the frist level at the Jungle Walk were there is a water fall and
two phantoms. if you go to the water fall and look to the right there are
some rocks the silver skull. the Gold skull is at the 3rd section at the
dam and theres a walk way that ia on side were you get the marries out of
the bunker they are traped in it is up above and behind it and if you
follow it from were you get on it till the end you will find the other
skull. well that is it CYA.

Hi guys. Casualterror here. I played the campiagn as soon as i got home.
This Seirra 117 gave me a problem on Legenary. As other people have said
this is the first level in the game. I found both skulls on my own i was
proud of myself. The blind skull, which is a silver skull, is right after
the first encounter off to the right there is a rock looking over the
water and the skull is sitting right there. The Iron skull is close to the
end, the area where you save Johnson and the rest of the marines. Jump you
on the lenge on the bridge and head toward the buliding at the far edge
and jump up on that lenge. And just follow the building around and the
skull is sitting at the very end.
I’ll leave with this, I HATE the brute cheiftan with the Gravity Hammer.

should i license if i havnt played yet and how do you get the new armor
perms

WTF??

Wrap up

Until next time I’m Foo Mo Jive (and this is)
